Jean-Pierre Deflandre holds an Engineering degree in Physics and Instrumentation from the Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers, Paris (1987).

In 1979, he joined IFP Energies nouvelles in the Reservoir Engineering Research Division to work on oil shale pyrolysis, in-situ combustion of heavy crudes and underground coal gasification at the laboratory scale. At the same time he was involved in on-site applications of the techniques developed in these areas.

In 1985, he worked on laboratory analysis and interpretation of acoustic emissions associated with the propagation of hydraulic fractures in rock specimen. In 1987, he applied the developed approaches to fracturing tests performed on oil wells in Alberta, and then worked to enhance the acoustic response of well logging tools.

From 1989 to 2000, he carried out laboratory work on acoustic rock characterization in the Drilling and Completion Research Division, and was part of a team which developed permanent seismic monitoring system for both repetitive and passive seismic field applications.

Involved in passive seismic monitoring on different sites until 2003, he developed a software for the processing, analysis and interpretation of microseisms induced by the exploitation of reservoirs. He was then in charge of projects dealing with geomechanical surveillance of gas storage, experience which was later applied to CO2 storage.

In 2007, Jean-Pierre Deflandre joined the Center for Exploration-Production of IFP School to organize and teach new courses on Unconventional hydrocarbons and CO2 management. He continues to work in research as a project leader in the field of  CO2 storage.

He is author or co-author of  50 publications / communications and has filed 7 patents. He is a committee member of  SPE – France  and member of AFTP and EAGE.

He enjoys travelling, especially when it is coupled with the opportunity for deep-sea diving.
